Things to Consider When Buying Silk Bedding
Investing in a new set of silk sheets? You'll be using them nightly for years to come (and likely investing a hefty chunk of change to do so), so it's worth taking the time to find something you truly love. In addition to your bed size and color preference, here are a few key things to consider when buying silk bedding:
Material
As obvious as it seems, you'll want to double-check the fabric contents to ensure the sheets you've selected are woven with actual silk. Unfortunately, many bedding brands try to pass their polyester satin fabrics off as the real thing. Anything made from synthetic fibers won't have the same frizz-fighting, skin-clearing benefits, and it won't be eco-friendly either. While the most luxurious sheets are made from pure silk, more affordable options will be blended with cotton, linen, or lyocell.
Silk Type and Quality
Though there are numerous varieties of natural silk, nearly all silk bedding is made from Mulberry silk, which is produced by silkworms that eat the leaves of the mulberry tree. It's known for having superior smoothness and strength, resulting in lightweight, lustrous sheets with excellent durability and breathability. Nowadays, it's rare to see silk sheets woven using any other type of silk.
The quality of the silk fibers themselves plays a significant role in determining the overall price of a product. Silk is graded on an A-B-C scale, with further differentiations between each. While a set of Grade 6A Mulberry silk sheets (the highest quality rating possible) will likely set you back a small fortune,
Grade A is the highest quality of silk available. Its long strands have minimal impurities and a natural ivory sheen. When stretched out, a single Grade A silk floss can measure up to a mile long!
Grade B silk is produced using shorter lengths of silk floss, resulting in fabrics that aren't quite as smooth or durable. It's typically reserved for low-cost, low-quality products.
Grade C refers to the innermost layer of silk left behind after Grades A and B are removed from the cocoon. Short floss lengths and natural oils from the silkworms leave this low-quality silk with a rough, cotton-like texture and a yellowish color with minimal sheen.
Momme (Weight)
The term momme refers to the density/weight of the silk fabric. Think of it as a thread count for silk sheets. Fabrics with a higher momme are fully opaque with a luxuriously soft hand and long-lasting durability. While your average silk scarf will have a weight of 12-16 momme, a high-quality silk duvet cover will weigh upwards of 20 momme.
Price
Cheap silk sheets are not your friend. Made in ethically questionable conditions using lower-quality silk, they won't have the soft, luxurious feel you're looking for. It's worth splurging on a high-end bedding set that's made using the finest-quality craftsmanship and materials. Save up and spend your money on something that'll last for a lifetime.
Vegan Alternatives
Silk is a natural fiber produced by silkworms, meaning it's not vegan-friendly. If you follow a vegan lifestyle or are concerned about the ethics of silk production, opt for lyocell sheets instead. The plant-derived fabric looks and feels almost identical— and it's just as breathable too! It's important to note that there's no such thing as true "vegan" silk. Any 100% silk sheets labeled as vegan are simply a marketing ploy.
