Where should I put my firewood storage rack?
For safety reasons, you'll need to be strategic about where you place your firewood rack. The right location minimizes fire risks while providing adequate ventilation to prevent rot. Plus, properly aging your logs helps care for your wood-burning fireplace. Here's how to safely store your firewood using your new log rock.
How to Store Firewood Indoors
Storing firewood indoors may be convenient, but it comes with a handful of unintended consequences. Spiders, ants, termites, and other small critters can easily hitch a ride inside. Even worse, rotting logs can cause mold to grow on your walls.
With that being said, it's A-okay to stash a couple of logs next to the hearth for immediate use. Keep your stacks shorter than 3 feet with adequate airflow between each log.
How to Store Firewood Outdoors
The best place to store firewood is outdoors, in a dry, breezy area where it'll receive adequate airflow and minimal moisture. Wood should be kept at least a few inches off the ground and away from any walls.
Stack your firewood loosely to allow it to breathe and fully dry out. Ideally, your firewood should cure for at least six months. Store wood that isn't fully cured bark-side down to help moisture evaporate (especially in direct sunlight). Once they've fully aged, flip them bark-side up for better protection from the elements.
